Vulvar, labial, bikini-line, and perianal skin can darken with friction, hormonal shifts, childbearing, and aging. Some patients are comfortable with those changes; others want a more even skin tone.
Dr. Kevin Stepp offers the Pink Intimate System by Promoitalia, a professional topical protocol for intimate skin brightening and surface care. It uses no injections or energy-based device. Treatment begins only after the area and the reason for pigmentation have been evaluated.
Who Is This Treatment For?
This treatment is well-suited for patients who notice uneven tone or darkening in intimate areas and are looking for a non-invasive, physician-directed option. It is particularly relevant for:
- Post-partum patients experiencing labial and perianal darkening following vaginal delivery
- Perimenopausal and postmenopausal patients with hormone-related skin tone changes
- Patients after weight changes who notice uneven tone in areas affected by friction
- Surgical patients seeking aesthetic refinement following labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, or labia majora restoration
- Patients combining treatments as part of a broader intimate aesthetic plan
- Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI who have higher baseline melanocyte density in intimate areas
The Science
How Pink Intimate System Works
Tyrosinase Inhibition
Kojic acid and 4-butylresorcinol inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production.
Keratolysis & Renewal
Urea peroxide and papain promote exfoliation and turnover of surface cells.
Anti-Inflammatory Soothing
Bisabolol and glycyrrhiza glabra root extract are included for their soothing properties.
Key Active Ingredients
Kojic Acid
Tyrosinase inhibitor; reduces melanin synthesis at the cellular level
Glutathione
Antioxidant; inhibits eumelanin production and promotes lighter pigmentation
4-Butylresorcinol
Inhibits tyrosinase and related pathways involved in melanin production
Retinol
Supports collagen synthesis and cell renewal for overall tissue appearance
Vitamin B12
Reduces erythema and supports epidermal cell regeneration after treatment
Bisabolol
Anti-inflammatory; reduces sensitivity and protects mucosal integrity throughout the course
Treatment Areas
The Pink Intimate System is formulated for any area of intimate or sensitive skin with heightened pigmentation. Common treatment areas include:
Vulvar & Labial
Labia majora and the surrounding vulvar skin — the most common indication for this treatment.
Bikini Line & Inner Thigh
Inguinal folds and inner thigh hyperpigmentation from friction and shaving.
Perianal Region
Perianal darkening, frequently associated with post-partum changes and mechanical friction.
Underarms
Axillary hyperpigmentation from shaving, deodorant irritation, and friction.
Areolae
Post-partum areolar darkening is common and often persistent without intervention.
Mons Pubis
Superficial pigmentation of the mons, often accompanying labial and bikini line changes.
The Experience
What to Expect
Each session is performed in a private clinical room. Most appointments take about 30 minutes. Sensation and aftercare vary by treatment area and skin response.
-
1
Preparation & Cleansing
The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed with water and dried completely. We confirm your intake history and take standardized clinical photographs for your chart.
-
2
Product Application
4–5 drops of the solution are applied to the treatment area and gently massaged until fully absorbed — approximately 2 minutes. The product is then removed with a dampened cotton pad.
-
3
Cycle Repetition
This application cycle is repeated 2–5 times depending on your skin type and tolerance. You may notice mild tingling — this is normal and expected.
-
4
Soothing Finish
A soothing cream is applied at the end of the session. The clinician provides instructions about activity, shaving, heat exposure, and skin care.
Why It Matters
Why a medical evaluation matters
Pigmentation may be a normal variation, but color or texture changes can also occur with vulvar conditions that should be diagnosed before cosmetic treatment. Dr. Stepp is double board-certified in urogynecology and OB/GYN and evaluates the area in the context of broader vulvar and pelvic health.
Differential Diagnosis Before Treatment
Not all vulvar pigmentation is benign. Conditions such as lichen sclerosus, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, and contact dermatitis can present with color changes that should be evaluated before any aesthetic treatment begins. Our intake process screens for these systematically.
Integration with Your Surgical Plan
For patients who have had or are planning labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, or labia majora restoration, skin-tone treatment can be timed separately after healing. Surgery addresses shape or volume; this topical treatment addresses surface pigmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Patient Questions
What is the Pink Intimate System?
The Pink Intimate System is a physician-directed vulvar lightening and intimate skin brightening protocol using topical tyrosinase-inhibitor agents applied in a clinical setting. It targets hyperpigmentation of the vulva, perianal region, and inner thighs — a common concern among women of all skin tones. Dr. Kevin Stepp, MD, FACOG, URPS offers this topical treatment in Charlotte, NC.
Is intimate skin lightening safe?
The Pink Intimate System is a topical treatment performed after a clinical evaluation. Because irritation and pigment changes are possible, the clinician reviews skin condition, health history, and aftercare before treatment.
How many sessions are typically needed?
A course often includes 4 to 6 sessions spaced about 7 to 10 days apart. The recommended number depends on baseline pigmentation, skin response, and treatment goals. Maintenance may be discussed after the initial course.
Is there any downtime with the Pink Intimate System?
Most patients return to routine activities after treatment. Temporary sensitivity or irritation can occur. The clinician provides instructions about sexual activity, shaving, heat exposure, and skin care based on the treatment area and response.
Can the Pink Intimate System be combined with other treatments?
It may be coordinated with labiaplasty, labia majora treatment, Morpheus8V, FormaV, or another procedure when clinically appropriate. The order and timing depend on healing, skin condition, and the purpose of each treatment.
Should lightening be done before or after labiaplasty?
Surgery is generally completed first, followed by healing before a brightening course begins. The appropriate interval depends on the operation and recovery. Dr. Stepp discusses the sequence during consultation.
