PRP, PRFM & PDGF Therapies

Platelet-based and recombinant growth-factor options for selected tissue-support, intimate wellness, and recovery plans.

PRP and platelet-rich fibrin matrix

PRP and PRFM are prepared from a patient's own blood and may be used to support tissue quality or recovery in selected treatment plans.

The Biological Mechanism

Both PRP and PRFM rely on a simple autologous blood draw. When concentrated platelets are applied to tissue, they release a cascade of growth factors that recruit repair cells, stimulate blood vessel formation, and support collagen synthesis.

Customized Processing

Processing is selected for the clinical goal. PRP remains liquid and can be distributed through tissue. Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) forms a gel-like matrix that remains in place longer and releases platelet-derived factors over time.

A Standardized Option

Recombinant PDGF

Because PRP and PRFM are prepared from a patient's own blood, their composition varies. When a standardized growth-factor formulation is preferred, Dr. Stepp may consider recombinant platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF).

  • No donated human tissue or cells: This formulation does not require a blood draw in the clinic.
  • Recombinant formulation: The growth factor is manufactured using recombinant technology and blended with sterile hyaluronic acid (HA).
  • Consistent Formulation: Developed in a highly regulated environment, it is designed to reduce biological variability and deliver a consistent biologic profile when applied.

Targeted Clinical Application

The choice among PRP, PRFM, and recombinant PDGF depends on the tissue being treated and the purpose of the treatment.

Surgical Recovery Support (PDGF)

For complex surgical recovery—such as supporting the incisions of a labiaplasty or vaginoplasty—Dr. Stepp may incorporate recombinant PDGF. Applied to the site, it provides a concentrated signal intended to support healing and modulate inflammation without adding unwanted bulk.

Tissue Scaffolding & Volume (PRFM)

When the goal includes hydration, volume, or support of vulvovaginal tissue, Dr. Stepp may use autologous PRP or PRFM. The fibrin matrix can provide temporary scaffolding and release platelet-derived factors over time.

Regulatory status and informed consent

The recombinant PDGF formulation used by the practice is listed with the FDA as a cosmetic product intended to improve the appearance of tissue.

Please note: This PDGF formulation is a cosmetic product and is not intended to treat, diagnose, or prevent any disease, or affect the structure or function of the human body. Its application in surgical urogynecology and post-operative healing is considered an off-label or investigational use. Healing-support claims represent our clinical observations and biological rationale, rather than promises based on published gynecologic clinical trials.

Integrative Protocols

Optimizing Biologic Uptake

Whether using PRP, PRFM, or recombinant PDGF, these biologics rely on a vascularized environment to scaffold and repair efficiently.

The CO2Lift V Advantage

When clinically appropriate, Dr. Stepp may use CO2Lift V before a biologic treatment. Its carboxytherapy mechanism is intended to support local oxygen availability and tissue hydration.

The purpose of sequencing these treatments is to support the local tissue environment before PRP, PRFM, or PDGF is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about PRP, PRFM, and PDGF

What are PRP, PRFM, and PDGF therapies?

PRP is platelet-rich plasma, PRFM is platelet-rich fibrin matrix, and PDGF is platelet-derived growth factor. Dr. Stepp uses these options selectively to support tissue quality, intimate wellness, or recovery planning.

How are PRP and PRFM different?

PRP is a liquid platelet preparation that can be distributed through tissue. PRFM forms a fibrin matrix that remains in place longer and releases platelet-derived factors over time.

How is recombinant PDGF used in Dr. Stepp's protocols?

Dr. Stepp may consider recombinant PDGF when a standardized growth-factor formulation is preferred. Its use in surgical urogynecology and postoperative healing is considered off-label or investigational and is discussed through informed consent.

Where are these therapies offered?

Consultations and treatments are offered at Advanced Pelvic Surgery and Urogynecology of Charlotte in the Ballantyne area of Charlotte, North Carolina.
