The Mitochondrial Mechanism
To understand Red Light Therapy, we must look inside the cell at the mitochondria — the organelles responsible for generating cellular energy.
When specific wavelengths of red (650nm) and near-infrared (850nm) light penetrate the tissue, they are absorbed by an enzyme in the mitochondria called Cytochrome C Oxidase. This interaction displaces nitric oxide (which often impairs mitochondrial function during stress or injury) and allows oxygen back in.
The result is increased production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). With this newly available energy, the cell can perform its natural functions — tissue repair, collagen synthesis, and inflammatory regulation — more efficiently.
